The Green Seal is an initiative promoting sustainable event planning and management among commerce faculty clubs. In order to make events more sustainable, the project used GL water coolers in order to discourage water bottle use and reduce waste.
In order to reduce the ecological footprint, the project focused on reducing water bottle usage by providing an alternative: water dispenser service and 100% compostable cups. Less water and less plastic will was wasted from unfinished bottles at club events, and clubs were encouraged to be sustainable.
To increase student engagement, the Green Seal project encouraged commerce faculty clubs to come together and consider environmental issues when planning events. Green Seal increased student awareness of sustainable initiatives in the commerce faculty.
In order to reach out and educate UBC campus, Green Seal informed students about the sustainability initiatives undertaken by the clubs, which increased student awareness about environmental issues and sustainability, as well as show a serious commitment towards these issues.
Longetivity and Feasibility: Greem Seals water coolers have a lifespan of over 5 years, and the running cost is minimal–they lent these to clubs on a per event basis. This project replaced water bottles and reduced per Oz costs by 67%. Money and water savings were huge!
How did the Green Seal Project impact UBC? They saved money and reduced UBC’s carbon footprint by reducing plastic bottle usage through encouraging clubs to use the better alternative of water coolers. This promoted the trend of using compostable and recyclable materials, as well as steered students away from plastic water bottles.
