This is our final blog post for the year! AMS Sustainability has been great in supporting our team in developing our thermal energy storage device. Our two members, Amit and Michael have worked tirelessly to develop a system that is able to charge and recharge molecular sieves on demand. We took a research material in which its known practical use was as a gas/liquid filter, and altered its function to be a thermal storage medium. The results that we obtained were very promising – we were able to very precisely obtain the quanities of energy stored and expended in each cycle.
There were many challenges faced during the project, mostly due to the underestimation of the time it would take to finish specific tasks. During the last week before our research report was due, we ran about 10 separate tests, and had to replace multiple 3D printed parts and one heat gun! But we pushed through, and achieved success.
It’s been been a great run. Both Amit and Michael will be graduating from Engineering Physics this year, and we couldn’t have done it without the AMS Sustainability Fund. Thank you!
