As we all know, the New SUB is opening in a few months and there is going to be a restaurant at the top called “The Perch.” While there is lots of space inside the restaurant, it will also be offering space outside on their patio. We want to be able to squeeze out as much time as possible from the patio, but in order to do that, anyone sitting outside needs to be warm; they need to be comfortable!
The major component of the APSC 261 class was to investigate some area where we could incorporate a sustainable method of doing something, or improve an existing design. One of those areas was to find some alternative to propane heaters to heat the patio area for The Perch restaurant. After some brainstorming we came up with the idea to keep the guests warm by allowing them to sit on some sort of heated seat.
Our reasoning behind this is that there is less energy lost to the surrounding when in direct contact with a heat source, and therefore would be more environmentally friendly than a propane heater.
After browsing the web for something that would fit what we were looking for: portable, easy to use, and safe, we came across a product called Lava Buns by Vesture (a microwavable heated seat cushion). So we ordered it to test if it would be a viable alternative.
While we were doing that, we also crunched some numbers to find out the cost, and carbon dioxide produced by propane heaters, electric heaters, and the heated seat cushion. It turned out that the heated seat cushion would be the cheapest to use, and also have the smallest carbon dioxide foot print!
We also had a bunch of people test the heated seat cushion in a relatively cold temperature and they all said it kept them warm and were very positive about it.
It is common knowledge that propane heaters dominate the outdoor aspect of the restaurant business, but we feel that The Perch should definitely avoid propane heaters and choose something more sustainable. Our idea of heated seat cushions fits the bill and would also offer a unique experience to anyone who will dine at The Perch.
